Summer is finally here and golf season is in full swing! Of course, in Hawaii we have summer practically 365 days a year, so visit us anytime and we promise to show you a great time. Happy Father's Day to all the dads, granddads and great granddads. I love the fact that golf's US Open ends on Father's Day (June 21st this year). How proud a dad must feel to watch his child win the Open on Father's Day. Wishing you and yours a wonderful day to celebrate the joy of golf and fatherhood. I want to take a moment to send a special congratulations to Jerry Kelly. A good friend and supporter of the Spirit of Golf Academy, Jerry won the Zurich Classic in New Orleans, his third championship on the PGA Tour. MENTAL GOLF TIP: HOW TO HIT MORE GREENSfrom Darrin's Mental Golf Tip LibraryThis tip will help you hit more greens in regulation by doing one simple thing: take one more club.I enjoy observing how golfers operate on the golf course. You can learn a lot about a person and what makes them tick. One of the most interesting processes is watching how each individual golfer determines what club to hit. Some march out their distances by counting each and every step. Others use range view finders. Some look for the 150 marker and gauge their distance accordingly. Some just go with instinct. Into the calculation goes wind, elevation change, pin placement and for some the sun and the moon. All kidding aside, a golfer ultimately determines the distance and then selects the club that he or she believes will get the ball to their target. However, the large majority of golfers pick a club that they have to hit perfectly in order to go that distance. In other words, if they don't hit it just right, the ball will more than likely fall short. In fact, for the majority of amateurs, when they miss their target they're missing it because they are short of their intended target. They've missed the shot because of a slight miscalculation. The trick I like to use is to figure out my distance, choose the club that I want to hit, and then add one extra club. So, if I determine that an 8-iron is the right club to hit, I then add one more club and hit a 7-iron instead. Then I proceed with the same pre-shot ritual and strike the ball.If I hit it less than perfect, it will still have the distance that will get me to my target. If I hit it poorly, it may still be on the green but short. If I hit it perfectly, it will be a little long but most likely still on or around the green. Give this tip a try and see if you hit more greens and ultimately play better golf.

An Authentic Hawaiian Voyage through Time & Space.'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i tells dual stories of the renowned Maunakea volcano, with its world-famous astronomy and rich traditions of Hawaiian culture. 'Imiloa, which means "exploring new knowledge," reflects both the Hawaiian voyages of discovery and the explorations of astronomy.
Located on a nine-acre campus above the University of Hawaii-Hilo, with spectacular views of Hilo Bay, 'Imiloa Astronomy Center (formerly called Maunakea Astronomy Education Center) provides a unique experience for visitors, students, and families seeking to explore the connections between Hawaiian cultural traditions and the science of astronomy.
Camp 'Imiloa - Summer Science Rocks! 2009
Notice to all parents...Camp 'Imiloa is being revamped! The camp will highlight activities from our Science Rocks! after-school program: focused on science, math, culture, and fun. Students will explore such topics as the geometry of nature, space science and astronomy, chemistry, electronics and art, inventions and more. Students will be using the latest in science kits and equipment.
The original dates will remain the same:
Day Camp (for students only) will be June 29 through July 3

The best news is that the price has been reduced for each camp to $110.00. Members receive an additional 10% discount and pay only $100.00! The tuition includes all of the science supplies, tools, and Camp 'Imiloa t-shirt.

This summer, 'Imiloa is also offering a daily drop-in rate for both the Day Camp and the Weekend. The daily drop-in rate for the Day Camp is $30.00 a day and the rate for the Weekend Camp is $60.00.

Save a Sunday!

Starting this summer, Aunty Maile Yamanaka will be hosting weekly programs at 'Imiloa specially tailored for the keiki. Every Sunday, at 1:00 pm, Aunty Maile will be teaching the keiki Hawaiian songs about stars, simple chants, give book readings, and more. Mark your calendars!

Moore Family Day - July 4th

As a safe and fun-filled way to celebrate this Independence Day, 'Imiloa Astronomy Center will be hosting a special Moore Family Day on July 4th, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. For all of those keiki who have been able to take part in the 'Imiloa experience through the generosity of the Moore Foundation Grant, now is the time to share the excitement with a parent or family member.

In the Exhibit Hall, the focus of the multiple activities will be on the phases of the moon and the seasons in Hawai'i. In the Earl and Doris Bakken Moanahoku Hall, "Moore Grant Memories," a video showing highlights from the field trips, will play at 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, and 3:30 pm. The atrium will host a photo station, give-aways and raffles, as well as bento boxed lunches and store coupons. Even the planetarium will have something special: rotating segments of new and classic 'Imiloa shows!

For those students who have been on the Moore Grant field trip to 'Imiloa, a coupon was given or sent for the child's free admission with two family members, which expires on July 4, 2010. The activities are open for the community at-large at the regular admission price and is free for members.

ARFS Foundation of the Philippines

This is a new page I am working on for the ARFS Foundation
Home Page
My mother died when I was only six years old, I wanted to go to school so bad but my father wouldn’t let me because we were poor and he couldn’t afford to send me to school even though it was only public school. We had no money for any school supplies and we were disparate need of food. At the time, when I turned eight I became an orphan to a missionary leader name Ruben Ecleo Sr. He was the founder of PBMA which means Philippines Benevolent Missionary Association. I lived with his family but I had to work hard to stay in their house. It was during then that I learned everything at a very young age such as such as cooking, cleaning the house, and do laundry (hand washing). I had a really tough time then but I stayed strong and had faith to our Lord God, then eventually as years flew by I met my husband Mark Bartholomy. He helped me move to Hawaii and live a better life, where I am now still working hard as a massage therapist.
Goal: My goal is to help out kids who are in great need, especially those who want education. I want to give them a bright future because it reminds me of where I came from and how I got to where I am today.
Dreams: My dreams are to build my own boarding school so that I can help kids get a guaranteed education. I want to help kids who are wondering around the streets because it breaks my heart to see them like that and to remember that I was one of them before. Currently I am helping out 50 students from pre-school to college, and it’s all up to them to build their future. It makes me very happy to see or know that a student of mine graduated and achieve their goal, so please brothers and sisters help me support all these children. I have photos of every one of them if you want to sponsor or give a donation, every year you will be able to get an update on how they are doing and they will write to you. There are many children that are cold and unfortunately some die from hunger. Please take a moment and think how blessed we are from God. We have a house to live in, a comfortable bed to sleep in, a cozy blanket to keep us warm throughout the night and surplus amount of food. We are definitely very blessed, but some people out there think that they are not blessed because their financial troubles. We always have to count on blessings and don’t count the things that we don’t have. As for me, I really want shelter for those children badly, give them endless food and warm clothes. Brothers and sisters I am reaching to your heart right now, if u or anyone you know have un-wanted clothes, food, computer or any technological items, school supplies, and extra dollar please help these children. Every dollar you give will help in as much way as it can and also it will put a big smile on their faces that will melt your heart.
